Ascent Preparation Program
Our Ascent Preparation program is designed for those who wish to undertake skills refresher training and acclimatisation as a lead up to a Guided Ascent. This program is ideal for experienced mountaineers with a high level of fitness. This program is not suitable for beginners. The program provides an excellent lead up to a Guided Ascent and will maximise your chances of a successful summit (or summits!). The duration of the Ascent Preparation program is generally 2-3 days, run immediately prior to your scheduled Guided Ascent. The program combines training days before the summit attempt to refresh skills and acclimatise to the altitude. These lead up days are essential to maximise your chances of a successful summit and enjoyable experience. The training days also allow greater flexibility in the event of unstable weather. Whilst there is never a ‘guarantee’ that all summit attempts are successful, by undertaking this program you will maximise your chances of success. The Ascent Preparation program comprises training, skills refresher and progressive altitude acclimatisation. The format of the Ascent Preparation Program will depend on individual requirements, summit to be attempted and prevailing weather and snow/ice conditions. Typically it would include:
- Advanced rope skills – pitching, belaying, building safe anchors (use of ice screws and snow stakes);
- Ice climbing skills – top rope and lead climbing;
- Acclimatisation – this is done in stages in combination with training, staying at one or more huts at progressively higher altitude.
